Ostuni, with its 33.000 inhabitants, is one of the most well-known towns in the South of Italy, located between Bari and Lecce , in the heel of Italian boot, right on the Adriatic sea.
The characteristic colour of its buildings has given to Ostuni the name of the “White City”. Perched on three hills, Ostuni seems to dominate the surrounding countryside where the green of the olive trees encounters the blue of the sea.
Probably the city grew up on the site of a very ancient neolithic settlement, followed by a Messapian settlement. The old town has a circular town plan, which grew up around the Cathedral and is completely surrounded by fortifications.
The etymology of Ostuni’s name is probably derived from “hastu neon”, the “new city”, the medieval name was, in fact, Hastunium.
Ostuni is near the airports of Brindisi and Bari, served by frequent cheap flights from London Stansted and other european cities.
